New gun owner Springfield XDm 9mm and Remington 870

I'm very, very late to my great awakening, nevertheless I'm a proud new gun owner! I bought a Remington 870 Express 12ga shotgun and also picked up a Springfield XDm 9mm. Can't wait to shoot them this weekend. Only have 2 boxes of 9mm as everywhere within 50 miles is sold out.

Remington 870 with magazine extension was $349 NIB
Springfield XDm 9mm was $599 for the kit NIB
Probably overpaid some, but I didn't care and don't regret it one bit. The homestead is more secure as a result and I can't place a price on that. Next up is a Ruger 10/22 and an evil black rifle.:ok:

I didnt realze that the pump arm on the 870 coveres the feed port when pulled back. Maybe its your model and not all of them. I dont like that feature, leaves you one less option, whatever that may be ;)

But I do like the XD's, good choice! Prices dont seem to horrible either. Like the bullet 'mosaics' too!

yeah nice pics. Perhaps a bit big on the file size for the shotgun but you did manage to get it all in. Very nice. I have said many times (broken record) that those XD's are great. Feel great look great and shoot great. I'd love one of those shotties as well.

Get any trouble showing up to the front door you can greet them with "why don't you meet my new friend"

I'm curious about that shotgun too. I don't see anyone offer it.
All I see is this one. Anyone know what the deal is?

Nice. I just picked up an 870 last week (my 2nd gun... I've had that Glock 19 for a while). Price was exactly the same as you paid. Looks slightly different from yours though ...

This is what was on my label -

Re: New gun owner Springfield XDm 9mm and Remington 870

My recent 870 has a much shorter foreend. It has the words "Remington" in and on it so I know it is not a result of the Butler Creek folding stock that Remington is putting them out of the factory with. Don't blame me for the folder, it was my wife's pick. It shoots fine on the shoulder although a bit stiff. I suppose folding is good for storage and travel as we keep it folded next to the bed. My accuracy in cruiser mode is pretty crappy, though.

I use those some Federal Blue boxes for practice. The #8 and #9 are both $6.49/25ct at Gander Mountain. Can't beat that price AFAIK. I load Remington Express 00 Buck (green shell) $5.99/5ct for home defense. I've considered the Federal Reduced Recoil 00 Buck $7.99/5ct but figure the extra money doesn't account for reduced recoil when adrenaline is flooding my system. Then again, I haven't tried the reduced recoil loads and maybe it is worth the extra $$?

Winchest low recoil and full power 00 buck for 17.99 a box of 25 or 19.99 for Reminginton.

Buying in the 5 rnd boxes really eats into your wallet! I learned that the hard way.

Ya know, if you guys are unhappy with your 870 stocks, take a look at this nice alternative.
See the forend piece and the SpecOps stock or the SpecOps NRS
For $89 to $120 you can trick it out nicely. This is what I'd do, if I wasn't happy the way it is.

Congrats on your first small, albeit important step! However, the above statement is a false sense of security until you become intimately familiar with both of those weapons; fumbling around with your weapon when SHTF could be deadly. Both guns have to become the extensions of your body, and you have to "feel" each one of them and understand their "feedback". Practice as much as you can; live fire is a good practice, but don't underestimate dry firing practice, especially with a pistol. You have to get to the point where you can draw and aim the gun with your eyes closed, and have the sights in perfect alignment. It will also help you get used to the trigger and avoid "flinching" (pushing the muzzle down anticipating recoil). Of course you must make sure your gun is unloaded before every dry-firing session!

I've always been unclear on what types or reasons weapons should not be dry-fired. Snap caps can be had for a variety of firearms but I have yet to invest in any. Anyone care to enlighten me on what conditions I should be protecting the firearm with snap caps?

Good links. What I really need a line on is a good 870 foreend that includes an integrated light. Preferably under $200.

Most modern weapons can be dry-fired without any negative effects on the gun. The exception from that rule is rimfire weapons - those should not be dry-fired. I dry-fire thousands of "virtual rounds" through my pistols and haven't had any problems with any of them. Now, dropping the slide on an empty chamber is something that should be avoided on all weapons.

Pulling the slide back and letting go on an empty chamber, or releasing the slide from the slide stop/lock with an empty chamber, could damage your gun. The guns are designed to have the slide travel forward with enough force to strip a live round from the magazine and feed it into the chamber, therefore the round "absorbs" some of the energy of the moving slide. Without the round, all that energy is transferred to the receiver (and other parts) when the slide slams into it. It could damage the frame or the firing group parts. You probably won't do any damage if you do it once or twice, but doing so repeatedly could be dangerous.

Ohhhhhhh...... I see.

I never really thought about it like that but it dose make total sense.

Glad I could help.

As far as snap caps go, I wouldn't waste my money on them. Some of the cheaper plastic ones could actually clog up your firing pin hole if used often, leading to the firing pin getting stuck and rendering your gun useless when you least expect it. About the only good use of snap caps is to test new shooters (and even more experienced ones every once in a while) for flinching; they make it very easy to spot.

So dry squeezing not the biggest sin in the book.

Racking the slide is OK; letting it slam home on an empty chamber is not. When racking the slide, just ease it back home with your weak hand, that's all.

Boy, I wish I had snap caps for a rifle last night. I had the whole of the thing assembled outside of the stock and was troubleshooting a interrupt/eject issue and had to use live rounds to perform the functions. I took things REAL slow and cautious like and kept thinking about snap cap heaven. Got the problem solved, though.

nice.. I've been digging through research and want a gun with the tenifer style coating for rust resistance and I've narrowed my choices to glock 19 or the springfield XD - 9.. I'm leaning towards the 9 because of the hand grip safety, reports that it's more accurate, and it has a 1911 style aim.

The only cons I've seen is that replacement parts are harder to get compared to a glock.. decisions, decisions....

Not that it means squat, but in California, my local FFL dealer tells me the XD's are not allowed to be sold. Reason is, they don't pass the drop test.

Or maybe SA just didn't want to pay the ridiculously high extortion [testing] fees to get their guns on the Kalifornia approved list. Of course I'm sure it's not the case with SA and their fairly deep pockets, but I know that's the reason some of the smaller manufacturers' guns aren't approved.
